38/400 vs 38mm 3-Start Twist Top Cap: How to Choose the Right Closure
38/400 vs 38mm 3-Start: What’s the Difference?
Many buyers start with a simple idea: “I need a 38mm twist top cap for my squeeze bottle.”
Then they see two terms in drawings or specs: 38/400-lukning og 38mm 3-start closure. They look similar, but they are not the same.
38/400 refers to a common neck finish standard. “38” means the nominal diameter, “400” describes the thread style and engagement. Most plastic squeeze bottles for sauces, condiments, and personal care products use this type.
38mm 3-start describes a thread design with three separate thread leads running around the neck. This structure can change:
how many turns are needed to open and close
how the cap aligns on the bottle
how the sealing system behaves under torque
A 38/400 twist top cap and a 38mm 3-start twist top cap may both fit a 38mm bottle in theory, but they often do not work together in practice. The thread profiles differ. The sealing zones differ. The cap technical drawing will show different closure dimensions and bottle thread compatibility requirements.
At xufu, the first step in any project is to clarify which neck finish the bottle actually has. The wrong choice leads to cross-threading, poor sealing, or caps that feel loose.
Why Technical Drawings and Datasheets Matter
Spec sheets and photos are not enough. A good cap technical drawing og technical datasheet save time and money.
A proper drawing should show:
thread profile and pitch
sealing surface location and size
dispensing orifice size and position
overall closure dimensions and tolerance range
A technical datasheet should include:
material details (for example, food grade PP)
recommended torque range
basic leakage testing results
compatibility notes for common bottle types
When a buyer asks for a white twist top cap or a custom dispensing closure, xufu always requests the bottle neck drawing or a physical bottle sample. We then match our twist top bottle cap design to that neck finish.
This step matters for:
38/400 closure projects
38mm 3-start closure projects
any twist dispensing cap or dispensing closure for squeeze bottles
Without clear drawings, you risk mass production caps that do not fit your bottles at all.
What Should You Test Before Mass Production?
Before you place a large order for a twist top cap or dispensing cap, you should run simple but meaningful tests. For a flip twist cap or twist dispensing cap, this step tells you if the design is practical for daily use. At xufu, we always send samples for these tests before mass production. We call this a sample request stage. It is small, but it prevents big problems later.
Fit Test
Screw the cap on by hand and check for cross-threading, straight seating, and correct tightness.
Leakage Testing
Fill with product, turn upside down, apply light pressure, and test under warm or vibrated conditions.
User Experience Check
Check turns to open/close, required force, and whether dispensing feels controlled in daily use.
Real Product Liquid
Test with your actual liquid or a close match to capture real viscosity and sealing behavior.
Warm & Vibration
Simulate warm rooms and mild vibration to reveal sealing weaknesses before mass production.
Sample Request Stage
At xufu, samples are sent for these tests before mass production to prevent big problems later.
Avoid Cross-Thread & Leaks
Simple fit and leakage tests help catch issues that could cause field failures and complaints.
Practical Daily Use
User experience checks ensure the cap is easy to open, close, and dispense in real conditions.

How XUFU Supports Bottle Closure Projects
xufu acts as a bottle closure supplier and OEM dispensing cap partner for many food and condiment brands. Our support usually covers: For brands that need a reliable condiment bottle cap, sauce bottle cap, or squeeze bottle cap, xufu focuses on one goal: make sure the cap fits your bottle, seals well, and works smoothly from the first piece to the last in mass production.
Neck Finish Confirmation
We check your bottle thread and recommend the right twist top cap structure, such as 38/400 or 38mm 3-start.
Design and Drawing
We prepare a cap technical drawing with closure dimensions, thread details, and sealing system layout.
Samples and Testing
We send white or custom color samples so you can run leakage testing and fit checks before mass production.
Production and QC
We produce the dispensing closure under controlled conditions and monitor dimensions, thread fit, sealing, and visual quality.
Fødevaregodkendte materialer
For food applications, we use food grade dispensing cap materials and keep records for traceability.
Long-Term Support
If you change bottles or update your formula, we can adjust the cap or orifice design to match.
Fit, Seal, Smooth Operation
xufu focuses on one goal: make sure the cap fits your bottle, seals well, and works smoothly in mass production.
Reliable Closure Partner
A trusted partner for condiment, sauce, and squeeze bottle caps that need consistent performance.
A Real Project: Helping a Customer Compare Two Neck Finishes
A sauce brand came to xufu with a simple question: “Which cap should we use, 38/400 or 38mm 3-start?”
They already had bottles, but the bottles came from two different suppliers. One used a 38/400 neck finish. The other used a 38mm 3-start design. They wanted one standard twist top bottle cap for both.
We did the following:
Measured both bottle necks and compared thread profiles
Prepared two versions of a plastic dispensing cap: one for 38/400, one for 38mm 3-start
Ran fit tests and leakage testing on both combinations
The test showed:
The 38/400 twist top cap sealed well on the 38/400 bottle but cross-threaded on the 3-start bottle.
The 38mm 3-start cap worked on its own bottle, but felt looser on the 38/400 bottle.
In the end, the customer decided to standardize on one neck finish for all future production. They chose the 38/400 closure because it matched more of their existing tooling and filling line setup.
We then produced a custom dispensing closure based on that neck finish, with a controlled dispensing orifice and a simple sealing system suited to their sauce viscosity.
This project shows why bottle thread compatibility must be checked early, not after mass production.
