Many buyers start with a simple idea: “I need a 38mm twist top cap for my squeeze bottle.”

38/400 refers to a common neck finish standard. “38” means the nominal diameter, “400” describes the thread style and engagement. Most plastic squeeze bottles for sauces, condiments, and personal care products use this type.
38mm 3-start describes a thread design with three separate thread leads running around the neck. This structure can change:
how many turns are needed to open and close
how the cap aligns on the bottle

A 38/400 twist top cap and a 38mm 3-start twist top cap may both fit a 38mm bottle in theory, but they often do not work together in practice. The thread profiles differ. The sealing zones differ. A Real Project: Helping a Customer Compare Two Neck Finishes
A sauce brand came to xufu with a simple question: “Which cap should we use, 38/400 or 38mm 3-start?”
They already had bottles, but the bottles came from two different suppliers. One used a 38/400 neck finish. The other used a 38mm 3-start design. They wanted one standard twist top bottle cap for both.
We did the following:
Measured both bottle necks and compared thread profiles
Prepared two versions of a plastic dispensing cap: one for 38/400, one for 38mm 3-start
Ran fit tests and leakage testing on both combinations
The test showed:
The 38/400 twist top cap sealed well on the 38/400 bottle but cross-threaded on the 3-start bottle.
The 38mm 3-start cap worked on its own bottle, but felt looser on the 38/400 bottle.
In the end, the customer decided to standardize on one neck finish for all future production. They chose the 38/400 closure because it matched more of their existing tooling and filling line setup.
We then produced a custom dispensing closure based on that neck finish, with a controlled dispensing orifice and a simple sealing system suited to their sauce viscosity.
